Chairman's Welcome

Welcome to XBRL24 from H.E. Mr Mohammed Al-Hadari, SCA Deputy CEO for Organizational and Support Services, and XBRL UAE Chair

On behalf XBRL UAE and XBRL International, I am pleased to invite you to attend the 24th XBRL International Conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 20-22 March 2012 at the Yas Hotel.  XBRL24 will focus on the many exciting contributions of XBRL to business reporting by public companies and other business sectors, and perhaps more importantly for many regions, the development of thriving capital markets.  These benefits are being realized through the heightened transparency in business reporting, which is making data more reliable, comparable and usable by filers, regulators and investors worldwide.

Our conference theme, “Transparency: Available, Reliable, Comparable and Re-usable Data” is a direct reflection of our experience in the United Arab Emirates. As a pioneer of the use of XBRL in the Middle East, we are in a unique position to host the first ever XBRL International Conference in the region. Among the outcomes of our work so far are the participation of multiple exchanges, the development of both Islamic and non-Islamic taxonomies for the banking and insurance sectors that utilize taxonomy labels in both Arabic ( a first) and English.

The UAE experience is a unique opportunity for attendees to witness the benefits of XBRL as we move towards an October 2012 launch of our current project. For that and many other reasons, we are anticipating a high level of interest throughout the Middle East and Arabian Gulf to attend the conference. There is a high level of demand among both regulators and consumers of business data for the benefits that the use of XBRL brings. This will open up new avenues of cooperation and business development for the XBRL Community.

The program for the 24th XBRL International Conference will feature several new elements, including a two-day, multi-part hands-on implementation workshop covering critical topics such as taxonomy creation, instance document creation and the use of tagging tools, analytics tools, business rules, validation of inline XBRL and more. There will also be a taxonomy summit covering all of the details needs to design, create and maintain taxonomies, as well as detailed examinations of existing taxonomies from around the world including GAAP and IFRS.

In addition there will be informative sessions on assurance, integrated reporting, innovative uses of XBRL and academic research, as well as keynote presentations from high level government and industry leaders.

The Emirates are known for their hospitality, and XBRL24 will be no exception. The conference is being held in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Hotel on incomparable Yas Island – a 25 square kilometers area of beautiful beaches, dining and fun. Also, the city of Dubai is the home for the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa which can be visited to admire the stunning views of Dubai. It is my sincere hope that while you are in the UAE you will be able to experience the many wonderful things the Emirates offers its visitors.

We look forward to welcoming you to Abu Dhabi in March!
